Known as Prime Time as an NFL player, Deion Sanders is bringing more exposure to the SWAC and HBCUs

Jackson State head coach Deion Sanders glares at his players as they exit the field during the second half of an NCAA college football game against Southern University in Jackson, Miss., Saturday, Oct. 29, 2022. Jackson State won 35-0.There was a time when SWAC football was as good as it got. Under legendary coach Eddie Robinson, Grambling State produced Doug Williams and Buck Buchanan.

Television networks have jumped on board. In April 2022, Jackson State became the first HBCU to have its spring football game televised live nationally on ESPNU. Hunter, a wide receiver/cornerback, was regarded by some scouting services as the top high school prospect in the nation, signing with JSU in December 2021.

“A day Jacksonians will never forget, a day that the SWAC will never forget,” Sanders said. “It wasn’t just a Black thing. It was White, Black, Hispanic, Asian. It was just a thing. I will never forget it.” Sanders’ popularity is enormous and gaining. And in the process is giving HBCU exposure that it never has experienced.
