Kane was a source of pride and a symbol of the club. It’s now all change for a generation of Spurs fans who haven’t known life without him
“He’s still a legend,” shrugged Ryan, a Spurs fan there to take a tour of White Hart Lane. One of the shop’s employees gave chapter and verse about how it was actually a shrewd time to invest in one of those shirts — because it won’t be available pretty soon. But it will soon be a relic, no more relevant to the Tottenham team than the retro Glenn Hoddle shirts you can also purchase.
“I had a conversation with Harry the first day arrived,” said Postecoglou. “He was upfront and honest and I was the same. You kind of get an indication there that he kind of made up his mind that if the clubs agreed he would go. There’s nothing along the way that’s sort of made me feel there’s anything other than this outcome.
“Our whole strategy has been around the fact Harry wasn’t going to be around more than likely, so it is not like we’ve had a pow-wow this morning and — ‘Jeez, what do we do?’. We knew it was coming and we’ve been working towards that.“Maybe the idea that Tottenham are “the Harry Kane team”, as Pep Guardiola once said, isn’t quite right. But 280 goals have just walked out of the door, and perhaps more importantly, a symbol of a club.
This is a club who, to one extent or another, have been built around one man for the better part of a decade. Last season he scored 30 of Tottenham’s 70 goals, and in a year when there weren’t many moments of joy under Antonio Conte — who gave the impression he was doing everyone a big favour by being there — Kane was a source of joy, pride, excitement — whatever it is you’re looking for when you support a football team.
