We need to talk more about what life (and death) really looks like for seriously unwell children and their families 🖋️ Dan McEvoy for ipaperviews

I realised quickly that my resistance to initially being referred to services was coming from a fundamental lack of understanding of what these services actually offer: wide-ranging, all-encompassing care provided to seriously unwell children and their families over time. I, like most people, believed that palliative care meant that medical professionals had given up.

Our introduction to CPC was lost in translation because I was interpreting it through the lens of sensationalised, high-profile news stories of families going through the courts to force doctors to allow their children to live. Most of us only get to hear about children’s palliative care through what we see in the media. Shows like the BBC seriesare often the only way people get to hear about the experiences of a family dealing with knowing that their child might have a life far shorter than expected.

The four-part series tells the fictional story of married couple Nicci and Andrew who fight through the legal process as theyas the doctors suggest. While the show sensitively captures the realities of family dynamics between parents, siblings and the world around them, it still amplifies the heartbreaking – yet incredibly rare – stories we are used to seeing in high-profile cases centred around tragedy and conflict, where parents and clinicians are pitted against each other.
