I took a full-time job at a steel-manufacturing company, starting at $11 per hour. I worked there for three and a half years and left making $13.75. I asked for two raises myself. But just as tax season in 2020 was about to wrap up, COVID-19 hit, and my company went completely remote. Before the pandemic, I'd planned to spend the summer working for the US Census Bureau, but that fell through. Suddenly, I was jobless.
