Morgan Rogers' €136m Chelsea move sets British record and highlights transfer divide

Morgan Rogers moved from Aston Villa to Chelsea for a British record €136m after Arsenal stalled near €75m. The transfer exposes the Premier League's new trading model as Chelsea prepare to visit Arsenal.

Arsenal welcome Chelsea to north London today with the transfer market still shaping the conversation around both clubs. Morgan Rogers moves to Stamford Bridge for a British record 136 million euros after Chelsea overwhelmed Arsenal’s attempt to sign the Aston Villa forward.

The match is a collision between contrasting models of squad building and spending. Rogers’ transfer was one of the defining moves in a Premier League window that passed 4 billion euros. It was agreed one day after Manchester City paid 135 million euros to take Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. Together, the deals reinforced the growing sense that the league’s richest clubs treat the market as a trading floor rather than a traditional shopping window.

Not every club shares the gleeful, merry-go-round approach to that model. Clubs including Manchester City, Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest have embraced it, while Arsenal have been far more cautious. In transfer rooms on deadline day, sporting directors, technical directors, analysts, recruitment teams, lawyers and administrators gather, with billionaire owners often ready to overrule everyone. One source called the emerging model a Wall Street approach.

Chelsea buy players they hope become stars, aware they can be stockpiled to supply clubs above, below or alongside them. For Aston Villa, the full Rogers fee can be recorded as income this year. Chelsea can spread the fee and wages across their books over five years. That accounting gap helps explain why two clubs valued the same player so differently.

Arsenal did not want to go much beyond 75 million euros. Chelsea, driven by co-owner Behdad Eghbali, took the bid to another level and blew Arsenal out of the water. New Chelsea coach Xabi Alonso believes Rogers will make his team better, stronger and more robust. Chelsea have scored seven goals in their opening two league wins but conceded twice against Fulham and three times at home to Brighton.

Sources at Stamford Bridge say Alonso made it clear that winning in such an open way is unsustainable. Even without European competition, challenging for the title feels beyond this team. The game at Arsenal is a severe test of the control Alonso wants. Rogers’ performance is a curious subplot, but the fixture also shows how different Premier League business models collide.

More than 2 billion euros of summer spending stayed inside the division. Chelsea had 39 exits this summer, a staggering number even if described as trades. Enzo Fernandez joined Manchester City for almost 135 million euros, the highest fee Chelsea received in that clear-out. Real Madrid did not want Fernandez, Atletico could not afford him, and Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain were not interested.

That left Manchester City as the only realistic buyer. One view is that clubs trade within the division because they want proven performers who lower risk. A more compelling explanation came from sources in England and Europe: English clubs have money and will pay more than anyone else. That is often the simplest reason a bubble appears.

Concerns are growing among executives about private credit funding much of the spending, as The Independent reported this week. One source said it can feel like Monopoly. Another said some owners are not using their own money. In Europe, clubs must be smarter to make money.

In England, one source said, they are the goose with the golden egg. Owners are so rich that they use football for their own fun, enjoyment and thrill. The contrast between Chelsea and Arsenal also appears in record sales. Arsenal’s biggest departure came when Gabriel Martinelli left for Saudi Arabia in a deal worth around 65 million euros.

Chelsea sent Liam Delap to Nottingham Forest for about 55 million euros after one underwhelming season. Forest had money from Elliot Anderson’s sale, but that was not the only reason they outbid Everton, Newcastle and Leeds. One source said the perception of the fee is different for the Forest owner than it is for other people. Delap joined Chelsea in 2025 because of a 30 million euro release clause.

Liverpool were also willing to meet that clause, and Manchester United were in the mix, but Chelsea won. England manager Thomas Tuchel was ready to call him into the next international squad with a World Cup approaching.

Then Delap tore his hamstring and his season fell apart. His value did not collapse, partly because of his long contract at Stamford Bridge and partly because Forest wanted to take on the risk and reward of trading. Those trades are now the norm. If Delap fails again, Forest could move him in a year and absorb the financial hit.

If he rediscovers his scoring form, Forest can return to the market looking like some of the smartest operators in the room.
