“Hey, I saw you in that Ally commercial!”Friends congratulated him on this appearance, because when was the last time a climate scientist at California Institute of Technology appeared in a commercial about allyship and sports? This was not the first time Nguyen defied people’s expectations.

At this age, not only did Nguyen have to deal with his diagnosis, but he also had to navigate the double-life of living in two cultures. Both of his parents came to the United States from Vietnam as war refugees after the Fall of Saigon in 1975, and the family got by with the Educational Opportunity Program during their early years. “We are the Boat People,” Nguyen’s father used to say, as he recalled his harrowing experience escaping the Communist regime in Vietnam.

When he felt inadequate and awkward, running made Nguyen feel capable and confident. When he felt he was becoming a burden to others, running made Nguyen feel independent and in control. When vision loss isolated him from his peers, running kept him connected to others. Running made him feel he belonged.

From there, Nguyen quickly learned how to swim and bike with a tether, and how to navigate tough water in open-water swimming. He was guided by teammates who would guide him in the swim, bike, and run, and he competed against other visually impaired athletes for the first time in his life. He changed his late-night studying schedule make morning practices. Everything revolved around his studying, training, and racing.
