The Rangers’ focus in 2021 was to throw more strikes, get more contact. Next up: Make those strikes more effective.

Thanks to biomechanics and sports science, the “average” fastball has continued to tick upwards in terms of velocity. Thirty years ago, a 90 mph fastball was considered above average. Last year, the MLB average on four-seamers was 93.7 mph; from the seventh inning on, when relievers own most games it was 94.3 mph.
