Paul 'Ski' McGee led the tributes on Tuesday to the late former RTÉ correspondent Tommie Gorman.

His former in Sligo Rovers’ 1976/77 league winning campaign earned him the attention of a star-studded QPR - and their manager Frank Sibley had signalled his interest.READ MORE:Declan Rice responds to James McClean's 'overrated' comments as war of words escalates

“QPR came in for me and Sligo were looking for too much money,” 16-time capped Ireland international McGee told the Irish Daily Star. “Frank Sibley came back to Sligo and they reduced the price, but it was still a lot of money. It was £50,000, I think, with another five or 10 grand on top of that.“Tommie sorted it all out and then Frank rang me on Tommie’s phone and said, ‘We’re willing to do the deal, we want you over here’.”

International recognition soon followed, with McGee winning 16 senior caps, while there were spells at Preston and Burnley, before he returned to the League of Ireland in 1983. “Every summer when I went home we’d meet for a few drinks. He came over to me a good few times in England to watch some matches. We got on great together,” he said.“He was very unassuming. He was with me all my football life. If I had any problems I would have had no problem ringing Tommie.”
