Queen Elizabeth's father died aged 56 on February 6, 1952
'The King died early this morning at Sandringham. He passed peacefully away in his sleep'. So theThe shy 56-year-old was a reluctant king who came to the throne after his brother Edward abdicated in order to marry the American divorcee Wallis Simpson. But having led his country though the horrors and privations of the Second World War - famously staying in London throughout the Blitz - he earnt the affections of the British people.
An M.E.N. leader column on the day of death attempted to sum up the mood of the nation. Headlined 'Friend of his people' it read:"Our King is dead and in every heart - in every land of the British family of nations - there is a deep, shocked grief that words are inadequate to express. "King George VI was very much the father of his people; his was no remote and isolated throne, something which existed but had little impact on ordinary men and women and for which, therefore, they could feel little emotion. He was a king, indeed, but was also a warm and great-hearted human being, who while bearing his high office regally retained the common touch and drew towards himself and his family the affection and sympathy of a quarter of the world's peoples.
