Dwayne Johnson just shared a look at one of the exercises he uses to build those massive legs
When Dwayne"The Rock" Johnson landed the lead role in DC's upcoming Black Adam movie, he committed to preparing for the movie by getting into the best shape of his career so that he could fully embody the physicality of a superhero. This meant packing on more muscle than ever before, including some serious leg gains.
In a recent leg day workout video on Instagram, Johnson has shared a look into one of the challenging lower body exercises he used to blast his quads: step ups. Johnson is performing a weighted version of the step up to begin with, loading up the exercise to make it more difficult. He then drop sets the move when he approaches failure, finishing with just his bodyweight. He's doing a smaller number of bodyweight reps, but that's OK: at this point in the workout he's maxing out, and it's better to do fewer reps while maintaining good technique than to compromise your form.
But you don't have to be preparing to shoot a superhero movie to get the benefits of this exercise. In fact, step ups can be a great way to build functional fitness, especially for guys over 40. Not only do step ups help to boost the power in your legs, but the unilateral nature of the exercise means that it also challenges your stability, bringing in the glutes and core at the same time.
