The TV licence has been a hot topic of debate over the years, but households across Ireland are still obliged to pay for it. The €160 fee applies to both homes and businesses, but there are certain conditions that could see you avoid the charge completely. If you meet these requirements, you won't have to pay for a TV licence in 2025: If you are over 70, you can get a free TV licence as part of the Household Benefits Package (HBP).
Some people under 70 may also be eligible for the Household Benefits Package and a free licence if they are receiving a qualifying social welfare payment. If you are under 70 and living with your spouse, cohabitant or civil partner, you can get the HBP if you are receiving a qualifying social welfare payment and either: You're getting an increase in your qualifying social welfare payment for them (see list of qualifying social welfare payments below), or They're receiving their own qualifying social welfare payment listed below, or They're receiving a social welfare payment not listed below and they pass a means test. You can live with other adults (who aren't your spouse, cohabitant or civil partner) and still get the HBP. Qualifying social welfare payments for those under 70 include: State Pension (Contributory), State Pension (Non-Contributory), Widow's, Widower's or Surviving Civil Partner's (Contributory) Pension, Deserted Wife's Benefit, Carer's Allowance (full or half-rate payment), but you must be living with the person you are caring for. A standard Garda Widow's Pension from the Department of Justice or an equivalent Social Security Pension or Benefit from a country covered by EU Regulations or from a country with which Ireland has a Bilateral Social Security Agreement
