in 2016, Kuhn was asked by the Patriots to do short hits for their video offerings in German, alongside Vollmer, a German-born offensive lineman who played seven seasons in New England.
The preseason games in 2017 were less than glamorous, as the two were broadcasting from what can best be described as a basement studio in Gillette Stadium, watching the action from a screen, even during the home games.“They realized, ‘Hey, there are a lot of Germans actually watching this,'” Kuhn explains. “In year two, when the Patriots were at home, we actually had a booth. And we were sitting there just like our American counterparts.
Instead of flying Kuhn and Vollmer across the country for the games, the network brought the pair to a studio in Miami every Monday. There, with a London-based remote producer speaking British English through an IFB to his hosts, Monday Night magic was made. There are approximately 15.7 million NFL fans in Germany, according to the NFL, and that number is growing. Kuhn and Vollmer represent just one of the league’s wide offerings of broadcasts — DAZN showcases games on Thursday and Sunday nights on top of their Monday night offering. Prosieben carries two games live each Sunday and, according to the NFL, the broadcasts saw an 11 percent uptick in viewership from 2018 to 2019.
Vollmer, meanwhile, had a slightly more textbook path to the NFL. Playing for the German National team in the national championship game, Vollmer — who was playing offense and defense — had coaches and scouts coming up to him and offering him scholarships. Something he didn’t realize until later.
