“We are among the first in the world to do something like this” 🌊 How Venice’s art museums are saving masterpieces by Tintoretto, Titian from rising sea levels

Restorer Romana Albini working in the Consiglio dei Dieci Hall inside Palazzo Ducale in Venice, northern Italy, on the gilded carved wooden ceiling surrounding Jacopo D’Andrea’s 1863 copy of Paolo Veronese’s oil on canvas ‘Jupiter Hurling Thunderbolts at the Vices’ mighty rulers, at the height of the maritime city state’s powers as a wealthy imperial force in world trade.

Now there are hopes all that could change. In a pioneering approach called “preventive conservation”, restorers are inspecting every inch of surface inside the building and logging their findings in a database so further emergencies can be averted. Inside the palace – where masterpieces such as Veronese’s ceiling paintings and Tintoretto’s 150 sqm Il Paradiso are displayed in ornate spaces – seven restorers are inspecting artworks, frames and walls for signs of deterioration. They gather the information using scalpels, lenses, cameras and endoscopes before logging their findings. They have also been fixing deteriorated surfaces wherever they can do so quickly.

“We thought about working by night, when the museum is closed,” Ms Abbate says, “but we needed natural light to properly inspect the works.”
