The HSE has been accused of requesting a young mum, and a number of families caring for dementia sufferers, to weigh soiled nappies if they ask for more than their medical card entitlement.Rebecca O’Riordan said when she sought more for her four-year-old autistic and epileptic daughter Emmy, she was asked for an “input and output report”, as part of which she would have to weigh the soiled diaper.
“She is still on those and has still not been seen over a year later, that’s why she needed the additional one nappy. “I am refusing to do that as it is so degrading, I have emailed them to say so, and to be fair to the nurse she sounded horrified and apologised to me for having to ask me to do such a thing.
She said: “We had one family contact our helpline to tell us that as they had no scales they were asked to hold on to the soiled nappy until the nurse called round to check it. In a statement, the HSE said: “We are very conscious of the needs of children with disabilities in relation to continence products, and we work to provide the best possible access to such products for those who need them.
