Thousands of people packed out Preston to formally welcome King Charles III as the new monarch this afternoon .
Floral tributes have been laid at the Obelisk by Preston Flag Market which was unveiled by Queen Elizabeth II on May 10 in 1979 following its restoration and re-erection on this site to mark the 800th anniversary of the granting of a charter to the borough by King Henry II. A book of condolence has also been opened at Preston Town Hall.
"On behalf of the City of Preston, I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to His Majesty The King and all the Royal Family as this time of great sorrow. God Save The King.”
