TV architect Hugh Wallace discusses the impact of his dyslexia diagnosis, his journey as a recovering alcoholic, and his ongoing home renovation project.

Hugh Wallace has spoken about how receiving a dyslexia diagnosis was a major turning point in his life. The TV architect, well-known for being the Great House Revival host and Home of the Year judge, opened up about how it gave him the drive to make his own way and work hard. He spoke about how after struggling in school, getting to college was like being 'liberated'.

When I got into college, it was like being liberated,' he said. He continued: 'When I was diagnosed dyslexic and knew that I wasn't an idiot, I decided from that point on I'd rely on no one. I wanted to make my own way in the work and to be responsible for all I did and make my own money. Knowing that I wasn't stupid transformed my life.' Speaking to the RTE Guide, Hugh said: 'I was lucky that someone diagnosed me in 1976 as dyslexic. Later I got into Bolton Street to study architecture and that was also where I learned to be comfortable with my sexuality, not least because several of my fellow classmates came out as gay during those college years.' Hugh has been open about being a recovering alcoholic since he first spoke about it when he was 55, but also noted it won't be something he'll be discussing much from now on. 'I'm done with that now,' he said. 'It can be counter-productive but while we all talk about the alcoholic, we really should be talking about the people around the alcoholic who have little or no support services.' Hugh and his husband Martin have been renovating their home since 2022, but they will hopefully be moved in before the end of the year. 'We'll have to be in the house by Christmas or else I'm divorced,' said Hugh. 'It's over two years now since we bought it in May 2022, having taken a year to close. We then got two planning permissions because we dithered. Then there was more dithering. Then all the walls had to come down, apart from the ground floor. Buyer beware indeed! Fortunately, we've been in the neighbourhood this past two and a half years.' Join RSVP Live's WhatsApp community to get celebrity news and our top storie
