The European Court of Human Rights is due to hear evidence today in a case taken by a group of Portuguese young people against 33 European countries.
The proceedings, supported by the Galway-based Global Legal Action Network , are centred on a claim that European governments have failed to take suitably appropriate actions to tackle climate change. The"youth applicants" contend that there is incontrovertible evidence in relation to the climate crisis, and the steps that need to be taken to counter the threat of further global warming.
They have called for deeper cuts to greenhouse gas emissions, saying the 33 states that are party to the action have failed to act with the requisite seriousness. The young people argue that their rights under several Articles of the European Convention on Human Rights are being violated by the impact of rising temperatures and the alleged governmental inaction.
He said the applicants would set out a case showing the impacts climate change would have on their lives and those of future generations.
