For Houston marathon fans, a different kind of devotion
Runners take off from the starting line for the 51st Chevron Houston Marathon on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2023 in Houston.Some runners take months to prepare for Houston’s annual marathon and half marathon, but as thousands of runners snaked their way through the city for Sunday’s races, a legion of fans showed a devotion of their own.
“This is just a great way to come out and cheer everyone on,” Vargas said. “It’s a fun way to spend your morning.” “Seeing everyone supporting the runners is great,” said Franky Nicholls, who was giving out ice-cold water bottles to runners as they whizzed by. “It’s a very good energy.” Stationed on a median strip with music and plenty of supplies to spare, Mike McRoberts and his group handed out small paper cups filled with sparkling wine, alcoholic gelatin cups and gummy snacks.
