When Huntsville, in partnership with the state and other north Alabama governments, attracted mazda_toyota to the Rocket City in 2019, the magnet was a TVA Megasite that covered 1,252 acres. This new annexation is only 32 acres smaller. More:
The shaded area represents the 1,220.5 acres annexed into the city of Huntsville on Dec. 15, 2022, by the city council. The property is bounded on the west by U.S. 31, on the east by I-65 and on the north by Huntsville Brownsferry Road. Huntsville’s latest annexation, approved Thursday by the city council, is a hefty plot of land just west of Interstate 65 in Limestone County that covers 1,220 acres.
But if you’re looking for perspective on how significant the annexation is, the Mazda Toyota comparison provides it. The site is roughly rectangular running north-south parallel to I-65 to the east and U.S. 31 to the west. It includes frontage on both highways. Its northern boundary is less than a half-mile south of Huntsville Brownsferry Road – also known as the exit where the new Buc-ee’s in Athens is located – and the southern border is near Ingram Road. The property wraps around Swan Creek Manufactured Homes & RV Community on U.S. 31.
