Huntsville is still chasing funds to build a skybridge over Memorial Parkway
Alabama’s largest city is again pursuing a RAISE grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation after missing out last year and several previous years as well.
“Every year, we get very, very close to making the list,” said Kathy Martin, the city’s director of engineering. “We have a debriefing that occurs after the announcements are made with and some of our lobbyists. They tell us that we’re highly recommended -- the terminology that they’re using. The data say we make it to the secretary’s desk and we’re one of the top 5% in the nation and they encourage us to continue to apply.
Last year, 90 projects were awarded in 47 states, the District of Columbia and Guam. The only Alabama capital project was $17.1 million to Tuscaloosa for the University Boulevard corridor project. Auburn University received $1.3 million in a planning grant for 11 pedestrian improvement projects within 10 communities of the state’s Black Belt region.
The project itself is expected to cost about $50 million and the grant would cover about half the cost.Resolving flood plain issues along Pinhook Creek would open up downtown Huntsville to more development and the city is obligated to make improvements along the creek as part of incentives in attracting a $325 million mixed use development to the site of the former Coca-Cola bottling plant along Clinton Avenue.
