I-81 could remain closed for another 8 hours because of fatal Schuylkill County pile-up
shut down Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County, and the highway does not appear to be reopening any time soon.
Pennsylvania State Police and PennDOT around 8 a.m. Tuesday confirmed I-81 will remain closed for another 6–8 hours between exit 107 to Tremont/Tower City, and exit 119 to Highridge Park Road. PennDOT spokesman Ronald Young said several tractor-trailers need to be towed away, and there is still debris on the road. PennDOT is helping remove vehicles and provide traffic control while state police continue to investigate, according to Young.
A snow squall caused near white-out conditions around 10:30 a.m. Monday when the first crash took place on I-81 north near mile marker 116 in Foster Township.
