I admire Sturgeon's honesty about the Tories, but hatred is useless without positive action ➡️ 'I detest the Tories and everything they stand for,' said Nicola Sturgeon in a BBC interview with Laura Kuenssberg on Sunday ✍️ FisherAndrew79
That phrase and her original comment has echoes of another politician, who was also on the receiving end of a backlash for expressing heartfelt disgust for Tory politics. Over 70 years ago, Labour Cabinet minister and founder of the NHS Nye Bevan caused controversy for declaring the Tories “lower than vermin”.
“They condemned millions of first-class people to semi-starvation,” as Bevan put it. “That is why no amount of cajolery, and no attempts at ethical or social seduction can eradicate from my heart a deep burning hatred for the Tory party that inflicted those bitter experiences on me.To me his words echoed my own experience and feelings. He spoke for many working class people: disregarded, defunded and demeaned by the Tories over decades.
That flame of anger against injustice, or “burning hatred” as Bevan put it, is what fires people to make the world a better place. So I could never condemn Sturgeon or Bevan for their hatred of the Tories. It is justified, positive and something I share.
