Zombie became the unofficial anthem of Ireland's rugby fans during the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
The war of words between Ireland legend Johnny Sexton and All Blacks star Rieko Ioane has been stirred up once again by the New Zealander.
Ioane posted on Instagram today the chorus of The Cranberries song Zombie - focusing on the words, ‘In Your Head’ - which became the unofficial theme tune of Ireland’s rugby team at the last World Cup. It was his way of taunting Sexton yet again, after the former Ireland captain revealed in his autobiography that Ioane sledged him in the aftermath of New Zealand’s win over Ireland in the 2023 World Cup.Read more: Johnny Sexton details post-match row with 'fake-humble****r' All Black in Paris
Sexton wrote in his new book: “As I stand there, hands on hips, staring in disbelief at Barnes, Rieko Ioane still comes up to me and tells me, “Get back ten metres,”.“Penalty,” he says. “Back ten.” And then, after Barnes blows the final whistle, he says, “Don’t miss your flight tomorrow. Enjoy your retirement, you c….”
“So much for the All Blacks’ famous “no d…heads” policy. So much for their humility. I walk after Ioane and call him a fake-humble f…er. It doesn’t look great, me having a go at one of them just after we’ve lost. But I can’t be expected to ignore that.”The dispute has fuelled a rivalry between the two countries that dates back to 2016 when Ireland defeated New Zealand for the first time in Chicago.
