The superstar talks finding her queerness while growing up a Jehovah’s Witness, developing her artistry, and the many fashion references that have informed her looks.
finale watch party at the Hard Rock Hotel in New York City.. You grew up with Jehovah’s Witnesses. How did you come into your queerness and transness in that space?
Growing up in a very religious space was weird because my family was not always practicing Witnesses, but the Witnesses’ moral compass all of a sudden kicked in when it was about my queerness [] – not when it came to anybody cheating or impregnating their cousin or any of that! With religion I always had that fear that if you’re gay, you’re not going to heaven. I had that in my head and was constantly trying to rid myself of that shame.
For me it’s all intertwined, it’s all my art. I am walking art. This is what I do, and this is my instrument and the way I express my creativity and my art – it just so happens that it’s in the form of drag. But drag to me has always been dance centred. In dance, every number has to have a beginning, middle, and an end. It has to have a crescendo and take you on a journey, and I am programmed to think about that when I do drag numbers now.
