'I go there to document what is happening in history, but at the end of the day, we don’t really learn from it' Getty photographer Chris McGrath on capturing Ukraine-Russia war 🖋️ by iburrell

McGrath’s photography is exceptional in its ability to capture the human face of a war that many, including him, still find hard to believe is happening. He pictures a girl drawing pictures inside a bomb shelter; a man walking his dog beside unexploded ordnance; soldiers sitting to play checkers with Molotov cocktails as they await an attack.photographer posts his work on Instagram in batches that create indelible vignettes.

The photographer would agree with these sentiments on the war’s worthlessness. After a year of documenting the conflict, his view of it is unchanged: “It’s absolutely pointless.” He routinely doubts his own purpose in the conflict zone and was unsure about returning. “Each time I go back to Ukraine I am questioning myself: Why am I going back now? What can I do? I am asking myself this question tonight,” he says, from his home in Istanbul. He was in Ukraine for the month before an invasion which he was convinced would never come.
