As strikes highlight the recruitment and retention crisis in schools, a former teacher shares her diary - revealing the pressures facing staff in a typical day 🕓 '4.30pm – The students are all gone so I can finally drink water and use the toilet'
– Most teachers have additional responsibilities, not just classroom teaching. For example, I am a head of year . Today I have to start the assembly with a “telling off” for behaviour during cover lessons. It’s not the student’s fault we’re understaffed., which means they are absent from school . Despite this I am still accountable for their progress and will have to justify why their grades aren’t meeting the targets that were set four years ago in year 7 .
There’s no time for marking now so I head to the staff room intending to grab some food but I’m waylaid by a student who was physically assaulted last week and is too anxious to go outside. I spend the rest of my break with them.– I start the afternoon teaching year 8. The technology fails and I somehow haven’t printed enough resources so end up creating a new lesson on the spot. Child’s pen explodes. Reluctantly send them out to wash their hands – hope I don’t get in trouble for that.
