Experts have warned about the new side-hustle con that will leave you owing thousands
A new scam is targeting hard-working Brits looking for extra income - and victims are losing thousands of pounds to crooks. Working-from-home and flexible job opportunities are highly sought after and scammers are taking advantage.
Often people are won over by the offer of earning easy money through simple online “missions”. The “missions” involve driving traction to a particular website, or product on a website. In some instances, victims might withdraw some of their money, creating the illusion that the funds are freely accessible and in a safe place. Victims are pressured to put larger and larger funds into their account and scammers reassure and encourage them, showing them how much they’ve earnt so far.
Katie said: “At first I turned it down because I have a full-time job but the ‘recruiter’ was quite persuasive. They gave me a training course, they seemed very knowledgeable and they made me feel reassured.” “I thought, ‘How do you sleep at night? You are taking people’s money’, they started telling me, ‘People don’t understand our work, that’s why we only invite certain people. I did get contacted by someone else who said I could get my account running again and get my money back. My account was around £3,000 down and they said I could just invest £2,000 to get out of the negative.
