Almost a quarter of parents have flouted admissions rules to get their children into their preferred local school KasiaLDelgado spoke to a parent who mastered the school catchment game which caused tension among the parents at her daughter's school

speaks to Samantha*, whose methods of getting into her preferred catchment area caused tension among the parents at her daughter’s school.

My daughter got into a school in our catchment area, and it wasn’t a great place. There were 90 four-year-olds in one class, and looking around it, it hit me that it just wasn’t the right fit for my daughter. There was, however, a school ratedin the catchment area of my mother’s house in a more rural area. So we left our rental house empty for a couple of months and moved in with her.

We were able to get our four-year-old daughter into that school by ending our tenancy agreement at our old place and getting our bills redirected to my mum’s house. We didn’t do anything underhand, as such, because we legally lived there. It was still a drastic move: I hadn’t lived at home since I was 16, and there was my husband, my daughter and me – heavily pregnant at the time – all in one bedroom.

When we moved into the catchment area, I didn’t make any mum friends, and that was because there was a lot of judgement from the school about what we’d done. I think there’s stigma attached to parents who go to extreme lengths for the right school, and for their child’s needs. There were times when I was living in one bedroom with two children where I seriously questioned if we’d done the right thing. It was really hard, it put a lot of strain on us as a family, and my husband and I as a couple but, ultimately, I don’t regret it, because our daughter is now in year seven of high school and she is exceeding in everything. So it has paid off.
