'I can see perfectly, but probably shouldn't have gone chopping chillies' 🌶
When I was at university in the mid 2000s, surgery to correct short - or long - sightedness was still a bit of a novel concept.
Many a time during my late teenage years I would go out on a night out in Darwen with friends, partake in perhaps a tad too much alcohol, and wake up the next morning with my contact lenses painfully stuck to my eyeballs. On one occasion, I had been out the night before my A-Level results, and when I woke up to go and find out my grades I was in agony with my left eye which was literally crying constantly on its own.
Later that day I had to go to see an eye specialist at Burnley Hospital who informed me that the skin had come off my cornea from sleeping in my contact lenses. When I went out that night to celebrate my results I was sporting a rather fetching eye patch. The day I went for the surgery was one full of fear, apprehension and excitement. I had been warned that my vision might be blurry for a day or two and I should avoid bright lights.
My dad peered at me anxiously. I blinked furiously before opening my eyes fully and couldn't believe what I was seeing. Or, I should say, how well I was seeing it. Panicking and thinking I could have caused damage to the corrective surgery I called the 24-hour helpline in floods of tears. "Turn on the cold tap, put your head under it and open your eye," I was told. Thankfully, within a few seconds, the stinging, burning sensation stopped.
