Luis Suarez admitted his sadness over his actions during a Liverpool Champions League semi-final and could understand why supporters were anger with him
The Uruguayan is regarded as one of the Reds’ finest-ever forwards, even if his moments of brilliance were sometimes tarnished by controversy. After three years in the Premier League , a spell which almost ended with title glory under Brendan Rodgers , he disappointed Liverpool fans by leaving for Barcelona in the summer of 2014.
In the first leg at the Nou Camp, Suarez left the supporters who once idolised him raging when he wildly celebrated giving Barca the lead, with Lionel Messi scoring twice in a 3-0 win, which the Reds sensationally overturned in the second leg. "I accept that and I say that hopefully they understand my situation: we were playing at home and in the Champions League semi-final. I lived one of the best moments of my life there and I think the supporters didn't forget how my attitude was in the Liverpool shirt. Now hopefully they are so happy with the Premier League trophy this year."
Speaking in 2019 about his lingering connection with Liverpool, Suarez told 11Freunde: “Anyone who has ever played at Liverpool remains connected to the club for a lifetime. The team plays terrific football and I am very interested to see how they do this year. I think we can still expect a lot."
