Everything was stacked against our relationship, and perhaps as a result, we became inseparable. Initially, when I was not away, we lived low-profile with Adam’s parents on the cliffs above Teignmouth in Devon. In 1997 we moved to Brighton, chosen for its lack of military presence, and far enough away from Portsmouth where I was then posted as a navigator in the aircraft carrier, HMS Illustrious. Even pushing a shopping trolley in Portsmouth risked being spotted and reported.
On the day the ban was lifted in January 2000, I instantly came out of my closet. I began a gritty campaign to push ourto become the inclusive organisations they are today. Anger at the inhumanity of the ban has never left me. The review is expected to recommend an apology on behalf of the state, hopefully, the Prime Minister himself. On behalf of the wronged veterans, we expect it to detail comprehensive financial reparations.
