''I spent money on my ticket so I can behave how I like.' is the mentality. People treat the aircraft like their living room, but spoiler alert – it’s $85m (£66m) and you don’t own it' - PassengerShame
What lengths do you go to, to make yourself comfortable on a long journey? I’m not talking about reclining your seat. I’m talking about your shoes, and possibly your socks.trip – a hot day on which I wasn’t wearing socks – I removed my trainers once the train had departed London, before enjoying a nice, cold beer. Would you have wanted to sit next to me? Possibly not, but my husband didn’t have much of a choice.
“Shoe removal offends anyone who’s not doing it themselves”, says Shawn Kathleen, or “SK”, founder of. SK was a flight attendant for a legacy carrier in the US for eight years, during which time she began keeping a journal of the often-unbelievable behaviour she would witness during a flight. Putting pen to paper has since morphed into a sensational social media account with 1.4m followers, which she started by posting pictures of bad behaviour, and grew as other cabin crew and then fellow passengers began sending in their own.
A common thread is shoe removal. There are passengers self-administering pedicures, socks being coloured on sleeping passengers by mischievous children with felt-tip pens, feet on bulkhead partitions, headrests, the fuselage and perhaps worst of all, on arm rests. According to SK, it comes from a sense of entitlement: “’I spent money on my ticket so I can behave how I like.’ is the mentality. People treat the aircraft like their living room, but spoiler alert – it’s $85m and you don’t own it.”I wouldn’t have dreamt of putting my bare feet anywhere other than the foot well of my Eurostar seat, though I have often walked up and down the aisle of a plane in socks.
