A stunning display, excellent battery life and best-in-class AI smarts are among the reasons Pixel 9a is a winner
I’ve been testing Google Pixel 9a, arguably the most compelling smartphone you can buy for less than €600.
READ MORE: Google Pixel 9 Pro XL tested: a perfect Android smartphone with an outstanding camera experience The rear of the phone is an area where costs have been cut as the 9a utilises top quality plastic rather than glass. It still looks and feels premium thanks to the aluminium frame. The device is IP68-rated for dust and water resistance.
The display bezels are symmetrical but are more pronounced than those on the rest of the Pixel 9 series handsets. The ultrawide is still one of the better lenses in its field, and produces decent images in good lighting conditions but shots are softer in lower light conditions. There is no zoom camera but you can get cropped in 2x images from the primary camera.
And you get the impressive and constantly improving Gemini Live feature that delivers real-time, voice-based AI interaction. You feel like you are having a natural conversation, as the AI assistant fluidly and intelligently responds to your questions or prompts. This means you can do things like point the camera at an aquarium tank and ask Gemini Live questions about specific fish in the tank. You can also tap the new screenshare button when browsing a shopping website and ask Google’s AI assistant to compare products or give you some styling advice.
