'My soul has suffered' Becca Fowles has had six operations to manage her endometriosis and has told of the impact on her mental health

as the condition wreaks havoc on their careers and relationships.

Women in the UK are still waiting up to eight years for a diagnosis and say they have often been dismissed and told their pain is “normal”, according to Endometriosis UK.Ms Fowles, who says she waited 24 years for a diagnosis, said knowing what the root of her pain was made her feel “completely justified and validated”.

“That’s when it really started dawning on me how much of a burden I felt to my family and friends because it wasn’t a quick fix,” she said. “At that point, I hadn’t learnt much about endometriosis, and that it is really a chronic illness and there’s no cure, and it’s an ongoing battle for the rest of your life of management.”

“I’m always validated at the end. But it could have been so much easier. And it could have been so much less painful for my mental health.”
