A woman says she has been stuck with a prepayment meter for nearly four years after she was transferred to a different energy company without her knowledge, which then broke into her home to install it.
Ms Graham said: “To be clear, EDF energy had no record of our names or personal details, other than our address, when they broke into the property and illegally fitted the new meter.”
She and her brother switched back to pay with British Gas, which wiped the EDF debt from her account. However, she has been stuck with a prepayment meter ever since. She has been paying roughly £70 in energy costs per month in her flat and believes a prepayment meter is likely to be costing her more than a smart meter.
She said she had contacted council contractors in charge of electrical maintenance in the flat, as well as EDF and British Gas, about removing the prepayment meter, but her current supplier, British Gas, has refused to change the meter back due to the wiring in her building. She has been told this will force British Gas to switch off the electrical supply to other parts of the building if they try to do so, she said. “It feels like this could be changed but there’s no will to do so.
