It’s also why I believe Labour should also back compulsory voting, which, as former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard explained to me recently, forces politicians to focus on the needs and interests of the many, not the often more extreme views of the few whose main passions are political. The House of Lords surely has to go as part of this change, and be replaced by something that reflects the need for greater devolution to the regions and nations of the UK.
