Cratloe’s Luke Murphy on his background in GAA, and his all-important try against England last week.
DESPITE HAILING FROM the GAA stronghold of Cratloe in southeast Clare, rugby has always been the first love for Ireland U20s back-row Luke Murphy.
Selected at No 8 for subsequent bouts with Italy, Wales and England, Murphy has also been named in this pivotal position for their final round clash against Scotland at Virgin Media Park tomorrow night . “I wasn’t ever the greatest hurler. I always enjoyed it with the lads because they were the lads I grew up with, but rugby was pretty much always on my mind as my first sport.” Murphy stretches for the ball during Ireland's draw against England. Though this was a big moment for Murphy, he did his best to downplay his own role in what could yet prove to be one of the most decisive moments in this year’s Championship.
