Who is the Warriors' whisperer? This 55-year-old former soccer player is a major power broker in the NBA's most valuable franchise.
Curry was sold on Celebrini well before the injuries this season. As one who religiously takes care of his body, Curry doesn’t dole out his trust easily. He could very well hire his own trainers if he wanted. And he’s been through enough injuries to recognize someone who knows their stuff. In a home loss to Milwaukee on Nov. 8, 2018, Curry suffered a left groin strain. Three months into the job, Celebrini was in his first rehab with the face of the franchise.
“He always tells me, ‘Dray, this is what I studied,’” Green said, using his finger to trace a line back and forth from his sternum to his pelvis. “’This is what I wrote my thesis on.’ I’ve never met anybody that knows it better.” Celebrini became interested in sports medicine as a teenager, after he fractured his ankle playing soccer. He did his rehab with Alex McKechnie, who was also treating professional athletes, and Celebrini was intrigued.
During the COVID-19-shortened season, Looney had his core surgery. Celebrini went with him to the Mayo Clinic and was by Looney’s side during his rehab. “I remember one day he needed to go see his son,” Green said. “He was in tears that he had to leave. We were in L.A. He was like, ‘I’m gonna go see Matt.’ He was in tears. He went for a day, came back and locked back in with me the next day. That might be the only day in the whole time that I did not see him.”
