If you lived in the Bay Area in 1997, one memory probably jumps to mind: flooding.

Dan Newell consoles his wife Efthina, residents in the River Bend housing tract near Modesto, when returning to their home after a two-day evacuation. Their house was half submerged in water as shown by the water mark behind them, after the Tuolumne River broke its banks.

The couple returned to find thousands of dollars of damage to their home."Police asked me what my address was," Efthina told the LA Times,"I told them 1329 Tuolumne River. What can you do? I have to make a little but light of it rather than cry all day long."Residents of Olivehurst evacuate themselves and their livestock as the floodwaters continued to rise on Friday morning, Jan. 3, l997.

Like in 2022, the Cosumnes River saw the worst flooding in the 1997. Levee failures in Yuba and Sacramento counties flooded Olivehurst, Arboga, Wilton, Manteca and Modesto. The entrance to Lower River Campgrounds in Yosemite National Park on Jan. 2, 1997. Heavy rain, warm temperatures and a heavy snowpack in the surrounding Sierra led to the greatest flood ever seen in the park. The estimated cost of rebuilding the campgrounds was more than $8 million, with total park damages near $178 million.
