No more Barry Bonds or Roger Clemens to kick around on the Baseball Hall of Fame ballot, but these candidates seem to be a bit lacking.

After last year’s hand-wringing exercise known as voting for baseball’s Hall of Fame, it was possible to be glad that we’d come to the end of a long road.

Then the Contemporary Baseball Era Players Committee got into the act. Not even one year had elapsed, and there were Bonds and Clemens again, front and center on the ballot this veterans’ committee would consider.

To me, the committee’s decision underscored one significant aspect to the Hall of Fame: It should be damned hard to get in. It should be an exclusive celebration of the best the game has to offer, and increasingly in our world we’ve come to understand that it must mean more than hitting a lot of home runs or striking out a lot of batters.Understanding that the game is bigger than you matters.

It could happen again this time, although there are a few players — and I voted for each of them — who might hear their names called if support for them continues to grow.
