Join Friends of Five Creeks volunteers near the mouth of Strawberry Creek on Berkeley’s bay shore from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday with an optional nature-discovery extension.
Volunteers will continue F5C’s longstanding control of perennial pepperweed, an invasive threat to ecosystems throughout San Francisco Bay. You’ll also learn about the waterfront’s colorful history and what global warming and sea level rise may bring. When we finish at noon, please join F5C in briefly exploring what lives on this urban tide flat, using simple magnification. F5C encourage using the free iNaturalist smartphone app to document what we see.
Meet at 10 a.m. on the northwest corner of the Sea Breeze Deli parking lot at 598 University Ave. just west of Interstate 80 and south of University Avenue . If you come late, walk west along the shoreline until you find us. Bring a re-usable water bottle and dress to get dirty, with sun protection, layers for changing weather and closed-toed shoes with good traction. F5C supplies tools, gloves and snacks.
