Ma gouvernante-My Nurse-Mein Kinderädchen 1936/1967 by Meret Oppenheim is one of the pieces on display of the artist’s retrospective at The Menil Collection on Thursday, March 24, 2022 in Houston.Just try not grinning the first time you encounter Meret Oppenheim’s “Octavia.”
The title refers to a historical Roman figure, the faithful, peace-making wife of Marc Antony, who raised not just her own children, but those Antony sired with Cleopatra. Don’t beat yourself up if you’ve never seen it. With Oppenheim, “most people probably don’t start anywhere,” says MoMA curator Anne Umlaund. The famous teacup lives at her institution and is not on view in Houston, although Menil visitors will find even creepier fur-covered gloves with realistic red fingernails. Umlaund says “Object” is too delicate to travel because its animal pelt sheds, and gluing it back on would be a challenge.
Many of the works have an enchanted vibe. Oppenheim gravitated to Greek mythology, Bavarian legends and French folklore — any place one might find deep forests and otherworldly, anthropomorphic figures. It wasn’t just woo-woo escapism, especially after World War II warped everything she knew; she tethered her ideas to earthly realities with her ascerbic with and mordant sense of humor.
