It is pretty easy to fall in love with Château Voltaire
For art director Franck Durand, who led the reinvention of the hotel with friends Charlotte de Tonnac and Hugo Sauzay of Parisian interior architecture practice Festen, all of this is music to his ears. This trio went into the project with the belief that the hotel should be as personal as it’s possible to be; each one of the 32 rooms are subtly different.
“I love Paris, and I always thought, if you don’t want to stay in a palace, or in a trendy hotel, where would you go?” Durand said, sitting in Brasserie Emil on the Friday morning of the Paris shows this March. “There’s nothing in between, nothing casual and quiet.” Durand wears many hats; he has his own agency, Atelier Franck Durand, working with major fashion world clients, and publishes the cultish and brilliant magazine,. Designing a hotel was new to him.
The handcrafted wooden light fittings have an Arts & Crafts vibe to them, though maybe it’s more William Morris by way of Jean Cocteau. Meanwhile, the bathroom might have a black and white Argyll-check patterned floor, an update on the classic checkered design—unsurprising given Durand spent a lot of time visiting former stylist Isabella Cawdor’s manse in the Scottish Highlands, drawing on his time there for inspiration.
