A Secret Santa gift exchange in a workplace turned sour when a woman received an adult-themed coloring book containing offensive and sexually suggestive language. The woman, feeling deeply offended by the gift, contemplated reporting it to HR before seeking advice on online forums.
Christmas time is a golden opportunity to show family and friends how much you appreciate them by buying personalized gifts, but it can be a challenge when you have to buy for a stranger. As challenging as it might be, buying for that stranger can also be the easiest thing in the world as it removes the pressure of having to get a present that shows how well you know them. For this reason, Secret Santa is a popular light-hearted game played in offices across the world at Christmas time.
The way it works is everybody is designated a colleague to anonymously buy a present for in order to avoid conflicts. One woman received a workplace gift that was so 'unpleasant' that she considered going to HR about it before posting about it on internet parenting forum Mumsnet. The gift in question - an adult-themed coloring book entitled 'Go F*** Yourself, I'm Colouring' - featured explicitly sexual words and connotations. She said: 'I like a robust swear and I have a job that can very much cause stress but I finally looked at it properly today and a lot of the words to colour are not swear words per se but really, really unpleasant misogynistic, sexual slurs and terms that I associate with pornography not swearing.' She continued: 'I have actually found myself quite offended that someone thought this was an appropriate gift for a fifty year old female colleague in a professional environment. 'My quandary is whether I should say something to the group or just hide it in the recycling and forget about it?' Many contributors to the online forum chimed in with opinions on the gift, with one writing: 'This is so grossly inappropriate for the workplace and so sickly misogynistic that I couldn't let it stand
