New figures show that nearly 4,500 people have been refused “permission to land” or permission to enter Ireland
The number of people refused permission to come to Ireland across the Northern Irish border has increased by 164 per cent so far this year.
Immigration officers may refuse people permission to enter Ireland for several reasons, including if they do not have valid passports or visas, if they are not in a position to support themselves and any dependents, or if a person intends to take up employment when they do not have a permit.
Earlier this year, Justice Minister Helen McEntee said there had been an increase in the number of people seeking asylum at the International Protection Office who had travelled from the North. The Government said at the time they believed these people had travelled from the UK. This was up 164 per cent compared to 2023 when 67 people were refused entry. Some 44 people were refused at the border in 2022, down from 91 in 2021. In total, there have been 4,457 people refused permission to enter Ireland this year at 12 entry points.
