'We should have got something out of that game, there is no doubt about it. I've played Clare the last few years and we were well beaten. We weren't well beaten today.'
Yet another period of injury time where the direction of Munster Championship jackknifed one way and then the next.Unfortunately for Waterford, they’ve now suffered twice in additional time in successive games, with two match points going astray. Pegged back for a draw by Tipperary, they had one snatched from them here.On five points, they’d be heading to Limerick with knockout hurling secured and a Munster final spot within reach.
Clare’s late winner via Mark Rodgers’s contested 65 puts them on the brink of another Munster final; a win against an already eliminated Tipperary next Sunday will send them into a third successive provincial decider, something they haven’t achieved since 1999. But they lived dangerously once again. Twice they led by eight points and while their second and particularly third and fourth goals looked like they might break Waterford’s resistance, the visitors charged back at them each time.
But a run of four points without reply kept Waterford in touch at half-time, trailing by 2-13 to 0-14. They were rewarded with an injury time penalty converted by Shane Bennett, after Diarmuid Ryan felled Patrick Fitzgerald, to level the game but, ultimately, it was in vain.
