The outbreak is close to the tourist hotspot of Goa in the south of India
Five beds in one Indian state have been ordered to reserve beds for patients with dengue fever after almost 11,000 cases. The outbreak is spreading in Karnataka state, which borders the tourist paradise of Goa visited by around 150,000 UK holidaymakers every year.
Commissioner of the Department of Health and Family Welfare, D Randeep said: “In view of the increased dengue cases in the state as well as in Bengaluru city, effective management of moderate and severe cases is crucial to prevent dengue deaths. Therefore, a specific number of beds shall be reserved for the management of dengue patients."
That is on top of bed the health department already set aside in community hospitals. The Karnataka government has been destroying mosquito breeding sites and is warning members of the public about the risks. Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection caused by the dengue virus, which is transmitted primarily by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes and, to a lesser extent, by Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. Dengue is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions around the world, particularly in urban and semi-urban areas.
