The historic Drake apartments were once a symbol of luxury for Indianapolis. Opened in 1929 toward the end of the the golden era of Indianapolis' building boom, the 27-unit, 41,000-square-foot building was a desired place to live. But nearly a hundred years later, the building fell into disrepair, and all eyes are on redevelopment.
Following that news, the Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission voted to assign a historic designation to the Drake building in September 2019, which was approved by the Metropolitan Development Commission in 2020. A preservation plan was also approved for the Drake, meaning that exterior changes and potential demolition must be approved by the Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission, putting limits on potential redevelopment.
"There are still several steps left to complete, but again, we continue to be encouraged by the progress we are making together," Blasdel said.
