An indie developer is utilizing procedural generation to create a toilet generator that ensures no two toilets will be alike in their upcoming game.
The world of video games often relies on repetition to save time and resources, especially in expansive open-worlds. This can lead to assets like toilets appearing identical across vast areas. However, one indie developer, known as Damp Squid, is tackling this issue head-on with a unique approach. Damp Squid is creating a procedural toilet generator within Unreal Engine 5, ensuring that no two toilets in their work-in-progress game will ever be the same.
Damp Squid's system utilizes a multitude of parameters to generate variations, including visibility, seat position, decals, tint, and, notably, latrine contents. This extensive randomization results in a staggering 17.23 quadrillion possible toilet combinations. While the basic can design remains consistent, the age, wear and tear, and, of course, the contents, create a vast spectrum of unique variations. Damp Squid emphasizes that the probability of two toilets being identical is astronomically low, far less likely than winning the Powerball jackpot multiple times or even a civilization-ending asteroid impact. This dedication to detail extends beyond the initial toilet design. Damp Squid is currently working on incorporating splatters and other visual elements to further enhance the uniqueness of each toilet. The developer's commitment to this seemingly niche aspect of game development showcases the dedication and creativity that can flourish within indie game development circles.
