It’s not always easy but everyone takes up the opportunity to show respect to past Indigenous players who have made it easier for each subsequent generation of Indigenous players to forge an AFL career, writes Mathew Stokes | OPINION

Sir Doug Nicholls Round should return to being called Indigenous RoundFrom the inside looking out, Indigenous round can be exhausting for players as the program becomes packed with media opportunities, ceremonies and even the responsibility of designing a jumper.

Since 2016, the round has been called Sir Doug Nicholls Round, honouring the Fitzroy player who played 54 games for the Maroons in the 1930s. I hope people don’t consider that view as disrespectful to Sir Doug Nicholls, as I hold him in the highest regard, but as a way for the round to recognise every contribution to the legacy the current crop of 81 male players celebrate in rounds 10 and 11. Maybe every year we have a different individual from a different state and recognition of them sits under the banner of Indigenous Round.

My enquiries about the Cats’ Indigenous history led me beyond that pair to Ronnie Burns and Gary Malarkey to Rod Waddell, who played 20 games with the Cats, to Farmer, who not only became a legend of the club as a player but coached them, the first Indigenous man to coach a VFL/AFL club.
